Tamam Albania

In August 2008, Tamam leaders visited an inspirational group of young people in Albania who had been running a psycho-social and educational intervention for marginalized youth in Marqinet/Gerdec, two villages on the outskirts of the nation's capital, Tirana. In March 2008 an illegal disarmament depot exploded in Gerdec, wreaking havoc on three villages and devastating the lives of thousands of people. Tamam leaders were deeply impressed by this informal group's effort to mobilize financial and human resources in order to swiftly intervene on behalf of the children and teenagers affected by this tragedy. Tamam offered them the opportunity to start up a Tamam branch in Albania. Since Autumn 2008 this group, composed of more than thirty volunteers and led by a small team of social workers and psychologists, has expanded and enhanced its activities under the auspices of Tamam.

Mission:

Our primary goal is to establish volunteer-based youth community centers in Albania's many marginalized communities. These centers, through the provision of a wide array of tailored services for the youth's personal and professional development, will strive to integrate marginalized youth into Albania's broader socio-economic and political spheres of life. Moreover, we will promote the values of volunteerism as well as the importance of urban-rural cross over by engaging urban youth as volunteers in the community centers. Although our immediate target groups are marginalized youth, young women and urban youth, we believe that sustainable change must be supported and fueled by the entire community. Hence, our grassroots work, while primarily targeting youth and young women, will subsume the community at-large. Based on the conviction that local populations must be their own agents for change, these centers, once stable, will be entrusted to the very communities they serve.
